Houston’s EZ-7 drainage ditch has been getting skated since the early ’70s — a straight-up concrete ditch in the northwest part of town, and old-school street skaters treated it like scripture before anyone was pouring parks on purpose. That grimy, DIY relationship with drainage ditches is where a lot of Texas skating actually comes from, not some designer’s blueprint.
Dallas has its own legend in Jeff Phillips, who ran his own indoor park under his name back in the ’80s boom, back when warehouses full of Masonite ramps were the move before real concrete took over. Skate Park of Houston had ramps with names like The Ninja and The Hurricane — steel, fast, and mean, hosting the “Shut Up and Skate” contests that pulled pros in from everywhere.
Then in ’98, the state’s Hazardous Liability Act cleared cities to build public parks without getting buried in lawsuits, and that’s when things really shifted. Around 2000 the public parks started landing for real, and now the state’s got North Houston Skate Park sitting at a reported 77,000-plus square feet, complete with a Texas-shaped bowl — because of course it is.
From a ditch in Houston to a state-shaped bowl the size of a small stadium, that’s the whole arc of Texas skating in one line — grassroots concrete turning into government-funded playgrounds without ever losing the grit that built it.
