New York’s never been a park state. Sure, LES has had its skatepark for years now and it gets crowded on weekends, but the real character of skating here comes off the streets — ledges nobody built for skating, curbs that were poured decades before any of us showed up, marble that chips your board and your ankles both.
Tompkins Square used to be the spot where you’d run into everybody, and it still pulls a crowd most afternoons, kids working on their first tre flip next to some 40-year-old trying to land a trick he’s been chasing since Girl came out with Mouse. That’s the thing about this state — the scene doesn’t really separate by age the way it does elsewhere. You’re all just trying to get your line down before a cop rolls up or the light changes.
Upstate is a different animal. Less foot traffic, more DIY. Guys pouring their own quarterpipes in a backyard because the nearest real park is forty minutes away and closes at dusk anyway. Buffalo’s got its pockets, Rochester too, but nobody up there is romanticizing it — you just skate what’s around and drive when you have to.
Winter’s the real filter. Four, five months where you’re either stuck on a mini ramp in someone’s garage or you’re out there anyway, frozen fingers, chasing one clip before your hands stop working.
