Skatepark in Florida

Florida’s skate history starts with a bowl, not a beach. Tampa’s original Bro Bowl went in back in 1979 at Perry Harvey Sr. Park, all keyhole banks and pool coping, and by 2013 it landed on the National Register of Historic Places — first skatepark on earth to pull that off. They eventually tore it down and rebuilt a near-replica, which still stings if you skated the original, but the bones are there.

Up in Jacksonville, Kona’s been open since ’77 and never closed. Guinness has it as the oldest continuously operating skatepark on the planet. That snake run will still humble you, and the vert ramp there helped define what vert even means.

Then there’s the Ollie — the trick every kid learns before they know what regular or goofy means — invented in South Florida by Alan Gelfand back in the ’70s, though old heads will argue all day about who really threw it first.

Skatepark of Tampa opened in ’93 and turned into the contest hub, running Tampa Am and Tampa Pro every year since, launching careers that ended up on magazine covers.

That’s the throughline here — Florida didn’t import skate culture from California, it built its own concrete lineage and kept it running while other states’ scenes came and went.
